<image:title>RTB Blog - Getting back to life - I have kept dreaming and wanting to go on a big trip ever since I was in the hospital, but after Pia died I was not sure I would enjoy it. But this trip proved to me that I still enjoy riding, although solo is very different form riding with someone.</image:title>
<image:caption>So I am still planning on going on a journey. But it seems that my original plan of going to Africa is not a good idea at the moment. Conflicts, wars and trouble at many borders makes it almost impossible to travel down west Africa.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - Getting back to life - Mentally I am still struggling a bit. Struggling to stay motivated, and to stay positive. Every day kind of feels like a battle. But physically I feel like I am starting to feel ok. I am not back to where I was before the accident yet, and I probably never will be, but I am back to a relatively normal life. I still have quite a lot of pain in my stomach, and my stomach muscles are still not very strong. But This week I managed to do my first sit-up! So that’s something…</image:title>
<image:caption>Ever since I got out of the hospital I have been going to a Physio and PT to build my strength back up. I have not been able to use my stomach muscles directly, so I have been working on strengthening all the muscles around so that I don’t rely on my core so much. Progress has been slow, but I have felt that I have been getting stronger.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - Getting back to life - After What happened with Pia I was very far down, but luckily some of the guys we met last year when attending Bukkerittet reached out to me and asked me to come riding with them. This happened just at the right time, when the snow started to melt in May. That helped me to get out of my own head for a bit and spend some time with other people. And it motivated me to keep going.</image:title>
<image:caption>Then they invited me to go on a trip with them for a week, and that was the kick I needed to get excited about riding and traveling again.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - My thoughts from the hospital bed, part 2 of 2</image:title>
<image:caption>For days I was doped up on a whole bunch of painkillers and spent most of my days half asleep. Luckily Pia came to visit me every day and took me for a walk so I could move a little bit and not become completely stiff. I had to walk around with all these cables attached to me for another week or so until the boil had been drained. After that I finally started to feel better again and now I am finally about to leave the hospital after 6 weeks. Unless another complication occurs. Let's hope that does not happen.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - My thoughts from the hospital bed, part 2 of 2</image:title>
<image:caption>I started to feel more positive and the doctors started telling me I could start preparing to leave the hospital. But a day or two after, my stomach really started to hurt and I had to do a whole bunch of new tests. Turned out I had gotten an infection in my wound and a huge boil had formed that needed to be drained. So now, instead of getting ready to leave the hospital I had to have another drain put in my stomach, a new catheter put in, an new epidural and a new feeding tube put in my nose. All of a sudden I was again hooked up to a whole bunch on cables struggling to even move and in a lot of pain.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - My thoughts from the hospital bed, part 2 of 2 - When I arrived in Trondheim I was well received at the hospital and all the nurses were great. Again I started to feel a bit more positive.</image:title>
<image:caption>After a couple of days, they decided to remove my epidural and also the bags sticking out of my nose and my bladder. I was again starting to look forward. Things were improving little by little every day it felt. But I was still really struggling to eat. My stomach just kept filling up and I got very nauseous and full very quickly. They had some X-rays taken and it turned out that the place where they had sewn the large hole in my 12 finger intestine shut was bulging inward creating a blockage where food could not pass through. I had another CT scan done and it just shows the same thing. They couldn't seem to figure out exactly what it was or why it was blocking everything. They said it could be just blood that would loosen up over time, but it might also mean I´ll need another operation. In that case I may need another 8-10 weeks in the hospital. That I was not prepared for.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - My thoughts from the hospital bed part 1 of 2 - I had a huge hole in my intestines and they had removed a large part of them. I still did not really grasp the severity of the situation. I just felt angry that I had crashed and was not on my motorbike. Pia spent as much time as she could with me, but had to go to the patient hotel next door to sleep.</image:title>
<image:caption>The first few nights were the worst nights of my life. I was half awake, half asleep, but in 3 different worlds. When I had my eyes open I saw moving sami drawings on the walls and when I closed them I was in a video game or an epic Hollywood type battle. Every time I fell asleep I was in a new place, but every time I woke up the dots and drawings floated past me. I was hallucinating and felt very nauseous and even threw up a few times. That hurt like hell since I had a huge cut on my belly.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - Our best day ever turned into a nightmare in a split second! Part 2 of 2 - It takes me 3 attempts to eat. He’s struggling. Upon arrival his nurse warns me they think he’s hallucinating. His pulse shoots up while he tries to tell me something, mouth some words. Time and time again I don’t understand and he rolls his eyes, just mouthing out words takes so much energy from him. I give him the notebook for him to write it out, but he can’t seem to focus his eyes well enough to see what he’s writing. The uneasiness of his face turns into panic when the nurse arrives. I explain what he’s doing and why, and how I would do the same if he was my patient. He drifts in and out of sleep and awakes with a jerk. “You’re dreaming. I’m here. We’ll get through this. We’re team Ride the Bean.” I send him my calmest smile and repeat these words while holding his hand.</image:title>

<image:title>RTB Blog - Our best day ever turned into a nightmare in a split second! Part 2 of 2 - It's the day after and it's finally time for me to fly to Tromsø. My care nurse has helped me find a number to Kenneth's nurse so I can get some information. I'm scared to call because I don't want to bother them. I'm also scared to hear the news they might give me. Breathe. Still in an induced coma. One surgery down, need another surgery today. I know so many people who care so much about Kenneth and I care for them too much to let them find out through the news. I reach out to Grant, our friend who has helped Kenneth so much. If he makes it through this, he’s gonna need a lot more help in the time to come. In all the uncertainty and all the pain I’m happy to have people around me who also cares greatly about Kenneth. Somehow it makes the load easier for me to carry. Make it to Tromsø university hospital and finally get to see Kenneth. He’s out of his third surgery in 24 hours.</image:title>

<image:title>RTB Blog - Our best day ever turned into a nightmare in a split second! Part 2 of 2 - As we land, we are met on our local airport by local ambulance workers. This is absolutely not how we imagined our homecoming. Two of them are in the front seat, while a third sits in the back with Kenneth. Kenneth has been dreading the journey for days, but now we´re almost there. The road is bumpy and Kenneth is both nauseous and in pain. The trip feels short though, because Kenneth is engaged in conversation the entire journey. We have quite a lot in common with the ambulance worker in the back, and hope to meet her in better circumstances later. For a coffee, in nature. We arrive in in our home hospital, the very same I work in. In the slightest sense of the word, we are home. But in another, far from it. Our home was on the road, our home was in a tent. Now 1500 kilometers separate ourselves from the motorbikes carrying our homes. We do not know the state of our Teneres or luggage, but we do know the state of our bodies. And they´re not fit for living on the motorbikes for quite some time. But we're not giving up anytime soon. We're Team Ride the Bean.</image:title>

<image:caption>In October 2012 I put my ass in an airplane seat on my way to Beijing, China. When the plane took off I regretted everything! “What the hell have I done?” “I have to go back. This is crazy! I have no idea what the hell I am doing, where I am going or if I’ll even survive.” When I landed in China and walked out of the airport it was a huge culture shock for me. Not one sign with letters I could read and not one person speaking a word of English. “How the hell am I going to find my hotel?”</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - The story of how Ride the Bean came to be - My first hurdle was not having a license. Longing for the independence of being able to go wherever, whenever I want. I tried to ride pillion on a motorcycle, and it was so amazing! Being a passenger while riding through picturesque forests, I realized the sense of wonder that fills me in nature can also be experienced on two wheels. I didn’t start taking my license before the age of 31, it seemed like such a big task. I never bothered to try, convinced it wouldn’t happen anyway. Kenneth believed in me though and helped me divide it into smaller goals. He even gave me time frames to stick to. “Okay, you have three weeks to study for the theory exam. I know you can do it. Figure out how.” I figured out how, studied, and did it.</image:title>

<image:title>RTB Blog - The story of how Ride the Bean came to be - In every social situation, this was how my thought patterns were. It was exhausting to constantly feel out of place and like I didn’t belong in the group. Over time it developed into kind of a compulsive thing. It because part of my identity to be the shy, weird and awkward one. I still don’t know why, but around the time I started junior high school, I started doing a few really strange things. I didn’t do it to get attention. It was more a way for me to stay focused. Then they became a habit that I struggled to get rid of. It’s gonna sound stupid but one of the things I did was to bang my head against my locker 10 times every time I took something out of it. If I didn’t do it I would obsess about it during class and not pay attention to the teacher.</image:title>
<image:caption>When I think back it is insanely stupid and I can’t explain it. But it somehow made me feel more in control of myself.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - The story of how Ride the Bean came to be - Now I don’t find the nerdiness of the coffee so interesting anymore. But I love what coffee represents. Coffee has an amazing history, and almost everywhere you go on the planet you find coffee. Almost every culture has some sort of relationship with coffee. That is my biggest takeaway from working in the coffee industry. How coffee connects people.</image:title>
<image:caption>While traveling Europe in a car, I started dreaming about what it would be like to sail around the globe. You can go wherever you want!! I wanted to learn how to sail so I could do that one day.</image:caption>

<image:title>RTB Blog - The story of how Ride the Bean came to be - So she got me into a school in Spain. It was a Norwegian school so the curriculum was more or less the same, but all my classmates were new. Both to me and to each other. And for the first time, I felt part of a group of peers. I struggled in the beginning, but they were very inclusive and helped me start viewing the world a bit differently.</image:title>
<image:caption>That year I had a lot of experiences that later would turn out to lead to big changes in my life. It was where my real sense of adventure started. I had been to Spain before on holiday, but living there, and traveling around the country made me see the country more authentically. I got to know the local customs and culture, and I started dreaming about traveling the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee blog - Specialty coffee finally coming to Verona, Italy - Right next to the famous Castelvecchio, the medieval fortress, inside an arching doorway you’ll find Garage coffee bros. From the outside it doesn’t look like anything special, but as soon as you walk in the door you heard the sound of a grinder and get hit in the nose by the distinct aroma of a Kenyan coffee. “YES!” I thought to myself. “Finally, some great coffee!”</image:title>
<image:caption>Garage coffee is the first specialty shop in Verona and opened during the summer of 2022. But the owners, Davide and Andrea Cobelli has a long history in coffee. They grew up watching their dad make coffee at home and fell in love with it, and in 2020 Davide won the Italian roasting championship.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee blog - Specialty coffee finally coming to Verona, Italy - The city is waking up and people are beginning to fill the streets. Most people are going to their favourite cafe to get their shot of coffee. In Italy “a coffee” usually means a dark roasted espresso, enjoyed quick at the bar.</image:title>
<image:caption>However, in recent years, specialty coffee has been getting a small foothold in some of the bigger cities. When I first came to Verona I did not expect to find coffee that I would enjoy. But lucky for me google gave one hit when searching for “Specialty coffee Verona”</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee blog - Specialty coffee finally coming to Verona, Italy - The locale is very small with only two tables and 4 stools, but that makes it very intimate and easy to talk to the barista.</image:title>
<image:caption>Behind the bar I met Ricardo. An experienced Barista and coffee geek and we started talking about the coffee culture in Italy and how specialty is finally starting to find its place here. Most Italians are very traditional when it comes to their coffee and does not want to try new things or new ways of doing it. Ideally the espresso should cost 1 euro, be dark with thick crema and be made on a dirty machine because the old coffee apparently preserves flavour.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee blog - The story of “The Bean” - For me, coffee has been my life since 2012. I stared as a Barista at one of the top hotels in Norway, Scandic Nidelven, and from there started competing in regional and national championships. In 2015 I started working as a coffee roaster and was part of opening a new coffee shop and shop roaster in Trondheim. At first, I found it fascinating how many different flavors a seemingly simple thing like coffee can have. And as I learned about why things taste the way it does I got hooked.</image:title>
<image:caption>Over time, after having roasted for a while and learned how I bring out each coffees flavor profile I started making decisions on which green coffees to buy for our shop and I started to learn about the coffee industry and all the different sides of it. I started to understand what the price of coffee actually means. I am not going to go into detail here, but let me give one example.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee blog - The story of “The Bean” - We are also very proud of the label designs for the bags. They were designed by another really good friend of ours. Louis Everard. Before we even started our youtube channel, he was the one who encouraged us to go through with it and designed our logo for us. He thought our idea was cool and did it as a fun side project. Louis and I met in 2015 and was also a part of opening the coffee shop. He was a chef and responsible for serving the food at the shop.</image:title>

<image:caption>This is why we always pay a much higher price for the coffees that we buy. Often upwards of 10 or 15$ per kg. That way we know that people get paid what they deserve so they can live a good life. That also means the final cup or bag of coffee costs quite a lot more than a cheap store brand coffee, but we know that nobody is being exploited.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee blog - The story of “The Bean” - In one kg of coffee, there are roughly 10 000 beans and each coffee cherry contains two beans. All the coffees that I buy are handpicked, then hand sorted up to four or five times. This is to ensure the best quality. It is then packed in bags and shipped across the world where it gets roasted by a coffee roaster like me before being brewed and served to a customer by a barista.</image:title>
<image:caption>After sorting, this is about 2-400 grams of coffee —></image:caption>
